Top Schools of Shredology: The Best Snowboarding Colleges and Universities in the U.S.

Going to get all edumacated? Just because you’re heading off to school doesn’t mean you can’t also head off to a snowboard heaven. So, check out these schools and cities that we’ve found to be among the best for some type of education, and offer some of the best college snowboarding and riding, best snow, best night life, and best people in the country. This is definitely not your average college guide. We’re here to educate you on why these schools are the best for enjoying our favorite sport, snowboarding, and not really what they’ll offer you as far as education (just don’t tell your parents about that, ok?).

The below colleges are listed in no particular order, other than placing University of Nevada, Reno at the top, because it’s not only within fifteen minutes of EternalSnow.com, but I went there. Yep, might not seem like it, but yours truly is an alum of UNR for none other than Journalism.

University of Nevada, Reno

I went to UNR because it was convenient, and, well, cheap, as my parents are Nevada residents. Anyway, I quickly found that UNR was a good match for my lifestyle of snowboarding, partying, and occasionally making an appearance in a class or two.
While getting my bachelor’s degree in Journalism from one of the top journalism schools in the country, acquiring professional awards along the way, I rode twice a week, nearly every week, at least four months a year. Might not seem like much to many, but that adds up to a few days each year.

The UNR campus is situated in Northwest Reno, a couple minutes walk from the casinos of downtown. Given the variance in traffic, it’s about half an hour to a full hour drive from Lake Tahoe, and all the snowboard resorts surrounding the lake. Considering that some of the best snowboard parks, big-man black diamonds, and insane backcountry, are all contained in this area, it’s a virtual heaven of shred and makes our list of snowboard colleges.

Oh, on that whole edumacation deal, UNR offers some great programs, including some best-of-the-country rated departments like the journalism, mining, engineering, and education programs.

University of Utah, Salt Lake City

Can you say Park City, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude? How about 30-45 minutes away from a good education? Killer snow, killer resorts, a good film school and great graphic design program. Also, the University of Utah has a good College of Engineering, most notably the School of Computing, and U of U was one of the original four nodes of ARPANET, the internet’s granddaddy.

I’m sure you’ve all heard of some of the resorts close to Salt Lake City, like Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude. These resorts are world known for many reasons, including light, fluffy, airy powder. Apparently the air and water vapor contained within the Salt Lake City valley, thanks to the great Salt Lake, create the “Lake Effect”, which creates light and fluffy snow. When that snow falls in the nearby mountains, it’s heaven-on-snow.

Even if you aren’t a powder hound, you can appreciate the soft and fluffy stuff, as softer landings can make learning tricks in the park much less painful. And, there’s hidden benefit of being a park kid at a powder resort: count on most people riding the powder on powder days, leaving the park all to you.

Western Washington University, Bellingham

No, I’m not talking about Washington DC, or even Starbucks, oops, I mean Seattle, Washington, I’m talking about laid-back Bellingham, bro. Just a short drive from Mt. Baker, and a scene that’s straight-up Washington, it’s a good school that has your bases covered. I mean, honestly, if you can ride Mt. Baker all the time, and say you’re going to school, what more do you need?

Ok, gotta keep the parents happy. Western Washington U has grabbed some notoriety for it’s bang-up Philosophy program, and the College of the Environment has a sweet new bachelor’s degree offering in emergency planning and management.

I also just found recent WWU student achievements on Wikipedia – I know, I know, but still read through them.

So, is there any reason not to go to Western in Bellingham? I so want to build my own little human-powered submarine now. Lake Tahoe, here I come!

University of Colorado, Boulder

Truth be told, there really isn’t a lot of riding around Boulder. About half an hour away is Eldora, offering up 52 runs from 12 lifts, or so. Other than Eldora, Colorado’s big resorts are a road trip away. Still, having a bus line shuttle you from downtown Boulder to Eldora is handy. Honestly, if you’re heading off to school to shred, Boulder might not be at the top of your list.

But if you’re into nightlife, small-town feel in a decent-sized city, a laid-back scene, and close-by shred, Boulder will fit the bill. The University of Colorado, Boulder, offers a great education, and will keep the parents happy. There are a few other small colleges and universities in the area, but UC Boulder is the happening place to study in Boulder while sneaking in some shred. Maybe leave out the bit about the shuttle to the mountain, don’t get a car, and they’ll think you’re focused on education rather than snowboarding. Just a thought.

University of Denver and University of Colorado, Denver

Like Boulder, you’re gonna be taking a mini road trip to hit a resort. But fret not young grasshopper, light and fluffy Colorado snow is worth the trip. Following the speed limit, you’re looking at about an hour or a little more on the road before you hit killer resorts like Loveland, Keystone, Arapahoe, Winter Park and Eldora. That’s kind of the name of the game – cities are built in valleys, resorts are built on mountains. The amount of snow, shred, and resorts near Denver, though, make the move out to ‘Rado well worth it. Just make sure you talk your parents into giving you that beat up Subaru you’ve basically destroyed since they gave it to you at 16.

With more people come more schools. Denver, being a much larger city than Boulder, offers a few more options in the education department. This variety gives you the chance to study what you want when you’re not out snowboarding.

My intent here is to persuade you to choose shred over school, cause that’s what’s really important in life, isn’t it? Ok, kidding. School is important – if you want to keep on riding for years to come, get an education, get a decent job with decent pay, and buy a pass every year. You see, I in fact want you all to become lawyers and doctors, and remember Eternal when the time comes to drop a few g’s on new snowboarding gear, such as snowboard goggles, snowboard gloves and snowboard helmets, every year. Seriously. Do it. In the mean time, don’t sacrifice four (or more) years of shred to study. Study, then shred. Then make money, and shop at Eternal. Sound good? I think so. Now, go. Seriously.

By now, you’ve all seen the FHM magazine covers featuring Tara Dakides and Gretchen Bleiler. If not, Google it, it’s worth seeing. We’ve tracked down five of the hottest, and best snowboard girls on Twitter. Why? Cause it’s interesting to see what the “fab-five” are up to. These girls are much more than pretty faces, they’re better shredders than most guys, and tear it up.

From the snowboard brand starting Tara Dakides to the young, up and coming Norwegian Linn Haug, these five girls cover every aspect of snowboarding through female eyes.

Chanelle Sladics

Chanelle Sladics might be most easily identified as a professional snowboarder but this girl is loves to surf and skate as well. A Newport Beach, California, native, Chanelle found her roots in boardsports in the nearby ocean and the streets of So Cal. Chanelle started her snowboarding career with weekend trips to Bear and Mammoth, and excelled quickly in order to keep up with her competitors that had a home mountain advantage.

She entered the professional snowboard scene only a few years ago with some great contest results but she always set the XGames as her pinnacle. In 2007, Chanelle’s dreams were almost squashed while taking a hard bail in practice and suffering a painful back injury. Chanelle sucked up the pain for her final runs and made a dream come true for herself, taking the podium in slopestyle at the Winter XGames.

Chanelle’s personality is bubbly but serious personality – she likes to screw around but takes business very seriously. She’s an electronics junkee and is never seen without her IPod, her computer and her digital camera. These days you can find Chanelle anywhere from China to Colorado snowboarding or taking a quick trip to enjoy some surf with her friends on tour in Tahiti or Mexico.

Gretchen Bleiler

I’m a Midwestern girl; I was born in Toledo, Ohio and grew up in Dayton until I was ten years old. Then my whole life changed. My family moved to Aspen, Colorado where we had “Avalanche Danger” days that kept us from going to school, climbed 14,000-foot peaks as part of my education, and I learned to snowboard.

From day one, snowboarding lead me down a totally different path and it’s that path that’s kept me laughing and continually intrigued. I love the satisfaction at the end of the day of over coming my fears, of spending all day outside working hard, and there’s nothing better than the feeling of landing a new trick for the first time.

I made my childhood dream of going to the Olympics come true through snowboarding, travel and learn about the world and my role in it through snowboarding, and because of snowboarding have lived experiences I never even dreamed of….and I’m a big dreamer! Now I’ve realized that I can use this success as a platform to voice the causes that are important to me and hopefully make a difference.

Along with Aspen/Snowmass, I created the first-ever all-girls halfpipe competition and photo shoot called the Snow Angels Invitational, am an active spokesperson in climate change and am involved with the Women’s Sports Foundation.

My other loves are surfing in warm tropical places, yoga, reading, mountain biking in Aspen, designing my signature apparel line with Oakley, and spending time with my family.

Linn Haug

I grew up in Trondheim, which is one of the biggest cities in Norway. My family has been up at our cabin in the mountains every weekend since I was born, so I started skiing at a young age. My sister got a snowboard for Christmas when I was 4, and as the youngest member of the family I had to do whatever my big sister did. I ended up getting a snowboard right after that as well, and I’ve been shredding ever since.

I didn’t compete until I was 15 years old, because it never struck my mind. However, I ended up getting a wildcard for the Norwegian Championships in 2005, and figured, why not? I won Slopestyle and Halfpipe for juniors that year and thought competing was fun after all, so I continued.

In 2006 I got hooked up on the Junior National Team and Burton’s Norwegian Team. The same year I moved away from home to go to a snowboarding high school in Geilo, Norway. In 2007 I did my first international contest in the states.

After the 06/07 season I got hooked up on the Norwegian National Team and the Burton European Team. That meant the world to me, and it still does.

Doing competitions, shooting photos and traveling all year around is amazing. To meet new people and see new places never gets old. Even though I am doing a lot of competitions, I feel like the snowboarding I do in between is what gives me the most. That’s when I can progress and push my own riding further. I am so grateful that I am able to do what I love the most and travel the world with friends.

This is my first season after I graduated high school, and it’s also an Olympic season, so I hope I can progress a lot and learn new tricks.

Leanne Pelosi

Leanne Pelosi is perhaps one of the best female snowboarders riding today. She’s scooped up numerous podium finishes, including first in the rail jams at the Vans Cup, US Open, Queen of the Mountain, and Gravity Games, ended up second in rail and tied for third in slopestyle at the Nikita Chickita Snowdown, and took second place in slope at the US Open – all in ’05!

Her professional snowboarding career kicked off in 2004, when she took the Rookie of the Year award at the ‘04 TransWorld Snowboarding Rider’s Poll after taking top honors in six rail events. Pelosi then moved on to nab Female Rider of the Year and Reader’s Choice at the ‘05 event, and was also named Snowboarder Magazine’s 2006 Rider of the Year. Leanne rocks 270 combos on the rails like they were second nature, and throws down Cab and frontside 720s in the air like, well, a pro.

Tara Dakides

Tara Dakides grew up in Laguna Hills, CA, and was greatly involved with gymnastics and skateboarding. As a teenager, her athletic activities became more risky, from surfing to motocross, and eventually this led her to the mountains and snow. This varied sports experience created the perfect model for a world class athlete.

Tara has crossed the gender barrier that the action sports hold and has risen above most men in the realm of freestyle snowboarding. She is hands down one of the best female snowboarders in the world. She won the Gold in both the 2000 and 2001 X Games Big Air, and also took the gold in Slopestyle at the Sims World Championships with her technical spins, rails, and big airs.

Tara has helped create her own Billabong snow clothing line, Vans snowboard boots, and most recently co-founded Omatic Snowboards. Tara spends her time between her winter house in Mammoth Lakes and hitting the surf at her beach house in Southern California.
